Alumni Profile: George Johanson

An accomplished and prolific painter and printmaker, George Johanson’s influence stretches over a geographical and generational landscape that reflects his seven decades of making and teaching. After graduating from Pacific Northwest College of Art, then known as the Museum Art School, in the late 1940s Johanson then taught at the College for the next 25 years.

Having studied at PNCA with Portland’s luminary modernists Louis Bunce, William Givler, Jack McLarty and Michele Russo, Johanson’s work is renown for its climatic narrative that surges with intense color and exuberant figuration.

“Johanson has been the consummate Northwest craftsman influenced by Abstract Expressionism,” said an Oregonian article. “He’s painted with equal intelligence and poetry the human figure and landscape. And he’s also woven complex narratives that alternate between realism and a gestural abstraction”
