An Interview with Brad Cloepfil

Brad Cloepfil is the founding principal and creative lead of nationally-recognized Allied Works Architecture, the firm behind the renovation of the historic federal post office on 511 NW Broadway. In the following video, Cloepfil walks us through his design for the future Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Center for Art and Design.

When PNCA President Tom Manley first came to Portland, he and Cloepfil sat down for lunch. Cloepfil remembers the meal: “I was excited about the next generation of PNCA. I was so inspired that I basically committed to him and the school from that moment onward.”

Of the future Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Center for Art and Design, Cloepfil says, “When you’re creating a building for creative endeavor and activity, you want the building itself to be a generator. You want it to be something that inspires new work, inspires new thinking, inspires activities. It’s kind of the perfect place.

Now the North Park Blocks will be given a new identity and activity. So I think its location will have a real generative force in the urban processes, and urban growth in those neighborhoods. It symbolically, physically, and every single way, establishes PNCA, or the next generation of PNCA, in the city. I think that’s why we’re all so excited about the Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Center for Art and Design.”
