Ellen Lesperance, faculty member, has an upcoming show in Los Angeles entitled Sylvia at Ambach & Rice Gallery. Lesperance creates paintings which represent sweaters worn by female protestors, and her work has been described by Art and America reviewer, Sue Taylor as, “With quietly beautiful paintings, ceramics, dyed silks and knitted garments, she honors the courage of those standing up against injustice or environmental destruction.” Lesperance also recently showed in a Group Exhibition called, Thread Lines at The Drawing Center in New York. This exhibition “disabuse[d] the tradition of drawing as simply putting pen to paper, framing it instead as an open-ended act in which lines can be woven, stitched, even embodied.” In addition to exhibitions, Lesperance has received a grant from the Art Matters Foundation to fund research at the Greenham Commons Women’s Peace Camp archives in London.
